Goodbye my furry friend…
By Michelle | April 4, 2009
With a very sad and heavy heart, we said goodbye to our Sheridan (15 1/2 year old little Jack Russell Terrier) on Friday afternoon. She was a spicy little girl who jumped and barked her way throughout our lives for the past 15 years. She was the constant for me…..she came into my life before my relationship with Jeff even began. Her fur caught many tears…tears of sadness and joy! I got her as a puppy when I was 21 and when Jeff and I started dating, my dad was sure he was the “one” because Sheridan didn’t bark at him. A few weeks after Jeff and I got married, we loaded up the car with that little girl in the backseat and drove to Georgia where we lived for a year. She kept me company while we were away from all of our family and friends in Seattle. Almost a year to the day, she hopped in that backseat again and we headed back to the West Coast where we found our house and made it our home. She patrolled our backyard with gusto and made certain that the fence did not become a passageway for neighborhood squirrels. She was the saving grace while Jeff and I were struggling to have kids and when we finally did, she welcomed those little girls like they were her own. When I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, she of course was my cuddle bug and listened to all those deepest fears that fill your head in the middle of the night. After my I-131 treatment this past July, I told her that I was going to be OK and I thanked her for staying with me as long as she had. I also told her that it was OK if she needed to go. Ever since our talk, she’s been going downhill, so it was time to hold good on my promise and let her go. After many, many, many tears, Sarah Jo reluctantly made a box for Sheridan to take with her on her journey (it had flowers, a band-aid, a pillow that Nana made, and a picture of her and Samantha) and she knows that when Sheridan gets to heaven she will no longer be sick and her and God will be picking out the perfect puppy that will come into our lives when the time is right. For those who knew her, there will never be another Sheridan. We were privileged to have her bounce and prance her way through our lives and we will miss her dearly. Thank you my little furry friend for all you have done for me and for all the experiences we’ve shared. Have fun in heaven, be young again, hop over the pearly gates, and freely chase those squirrels…we love you and we will miss you!!
