San Diego

By Michelle | August 13, 2006

What an AMAZING trip! We flew in to San Diego on Thursday without any motion sickness which was a HUGE relief. We had to turn Sarah Jo back around in her carseat per the doctor’s advice, but it definitely did the trick. We got in pretty late, but the hotel was very nice, had a fablous pool, and Jeff’s office was literally across the street. Jeff worked a 12 hour day on Friday at the office and Sarah Jo and I shopped in Old Town San Diego. It is a very happenin’ place with lots of tourists and lots of history. The food was AMAZING, and we got to meet Daddy and his co-worker Brian for lunch and dinner. In the afternoon we went for a swim and took a nap. I could definitely get used to that life!

Luckily Jeff was able to finish up a lot of things on Friday, so we were able to spend the weekend exploring San Diego. On Saturday morning we got up early and headed to Sea World. We decided that we wanted to see the first Shamu show and thank goodness we did because it was hot, hot, hot in the stadium. Sarah Jo LOVED the show and whenever she sees the video, she yells, “Shamu”, it is too cute! Her next favorite show was the Pets Rule. Lots of dogs, cats, pigs, even ducks doing amazing tricks. She found it very funny and entertaining. Jeff really liked the artic zone. :) In fact we just hung out in the exhibit to COOL OFF! Us Seattle folks are not used to the heat! We headed back to the hotel in early evening to put our feet up for a bit. Later that evening, we took daddy to explore Old Town and picked up some yummy dinner.

On Sunday we decided to hit the famous San Diego Zoo. We got there early and it was actually overcast that day, lucky for us, since it was a little cooler. There were still tons and tons of people and the zoo itself is HUGE. The maps are a little confusing and the zoo is actually catered to the buses that you can take throughout the park. We decided to walk since riding an open air bus was not really that safe with a 2 year old. We did manage to see lots of animals and they are much closer than the Woodland Park Zoo, so Sarah Jo got a kick out of that. We hiked and hiked because I insisted on seeing the Polar Bear exhibit which is at the back of the park. It was well worth it, the Polar Bears were out playing and eating. Jeff got some great video of these amazing creatures. The only thing we didn’t see were the monkeys and apes. We hiked up a few large hills and then decided to abort the mission since there were more hills to climb to get to the exhibit. We definitely got our exercise.

After a Sunday afternoon nap, we decided to check out Ocean Beach per the advice of Brian who grew up around San Diego. It was AMAZING and Sarah Jo had a blast. Of course Jeff still makes fun of me because I did not bring any towels to the beach. I really have no idea what I was thinking, other than I did not think it would be a beach like you see in the movies. It was exactly that, a true California beach! We had a BLAST and Sarah Jo ran and ran and then ran some more. It was great and one of those memories I will cherish for a long, long time.

All in all the trip was PERFECT! Sarah Jo did great on the airplane and during all of the activities. I feel so blessed to have such a wonderful family!!
