House Project , Natural Lawn Care, and Tonsils…..

By Michelle | September 30, 2009

Totally funny title for a post, but let me break it down one by one.

As mentioned before, Jeff and I finally pulled the trigger on getting the siding replaced on part of our house. Yes, it is the siding that was replaced while we were closing on the house (in order to pass inspection), but it was NEVER put on right, so here we are 10 years later, dealing with it AGAIN! We are hopeful and have been assured that the new cement board that is now installed (and looks fabulous by the way) will hold up for a good 50 years. If we never have to replace the siding again as long as we are in the house, I’m good with that…pretty much DONE with siding at this point! The two fun items of this project are picking a new paint color for the entire house and redesigning the front pillars. I’ve always wanted craftsman like pillars in the front and have always wanted a grey-blue house, both of which are going to happen. We are currently deciding between Smoky Blue and Indigo Batik for the paint colors, I will let you know what wins out.

Now on to natural lawn care. Dad and I got a letter in the mail, telling us about a FREE 3 week seminar being put on by the City of Redmond. The seminar is supposed to cover lawn design and how to care for your lawn more naturally. We thought, what the heck, it can’t hurt. We figured there would be 25-50 people there last night, but by the time everyone sat down, there were over 200!! It tells me that we are not the only ones struggling with getting grass to grow in the Pacific Northwest! Last night was really great (although we did not win anything from the raffle that dad conveniently blamed on my luck, not his…heehee) and the major items that I took away that Jeff assures me he has been telling me for years: reduce the size of your lawn and replace with NO maintenance plants fit for this climate, moss IS just a part of the Northwest…embrace it instead of trying to destroy it, make a plan to redesign your yard…’cause without a plan nothing will happen. Dad and I are hoping to take the first step after we finish up the next two classes with a plan….hey, that’s the first step right??

Tonsils….uuuuggghhhh! Sarah Jo’s tonsils have been enlarged for awhile and since the kid continues the loud snoring and the constant colds, Jeff and I were referred to Children’s Hospital to meet with a sleep specialist. We finally got in to see the doc on Tuesday and were told once again that on a scale of 0-4…0 being normal tonsils, Sarah Jo’s are a 3+ enlarged. Poor kid! Next step is an overnight sleep study because insurance companies will no longer allow tonsils to come out without a really good reason! Of course we said sure…can we get the sleep study done soon because we are going to hit every deductible/copay known to man again this year. Low and behold, the overnight sleep study appointments are scheduled out until Feb. 2010…really…come on! We are on a waiting list and will take whatever we can get, I’ll keep you posted.

Daddy was down and out with what I believe was definitely the flu all last week. I had been begging him to get a physical, but reminding him that I am not a big believer in the flu shot, so if I was offered it, I would not get it. He took my advice on getting to the doc for his annual physical, but not on the flu shot. He paid for his decision dearly (at least that is what I believe and will always believe). Luckily he is finally on the mend and back at work.

Now off to sit in traffic to get Sarah Jo to her gymnastics team practice. I finally understand what all my friends who have older kids have been saying all these years…that you really do just become a taxi. I thought I had a little more time…doesn’t appear so!
